Roundabouts – Kris Balaji
Do you like driving through roundabouts? It seems like they used to be common many years ago. Then they became less common as people wanted to get there more quickly. Kris will discuss how and why San Joaquin County is using roundabouts again like many other cities/counties.
Kris Balaji is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in California with over 25 years of managing and delivering public infrastructure projects. Kris is the Director of Public Works for San Joaquin County, managing diverse programs and professionals. He oversees a staff of approximately 350 engineers, planners, administrators and maintenance professionals who provide services to the San Joaquin County residents in over 20 different functional areas that includes highway, bridge, water resources, flood control, water quality, solid waste, fleet, development services, environmental services and utilities.
Kris holds a Master’s Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. Kris’ expertise in transportation includes experience as a highway designer, construction resident engineer, bridge designer, transportation funding and policy strategist, and transportation program manager. Kris brings more than 15 years of experience with Caltrans, advancing from a highway and bridge design engineer to the California’s Chief of Traffic Operations. As the Transportation Program Manager at the private sector, Kris was responsible for managing technical and administrative staff in preparing proposals, delivering infrastructure projects and mentoring staff.
