Transportation Committee Meeting

A discussion on the construction of roundabouts

The objective of this presentation is to share information about locally constructed roundabouts with a focus on the construction phase. Included will be pros and cons of staged construction with the intersection open versus road closures with detours, challenges, lessons learned, and challenges.

Michael will share information about roundabout design considerations and discuss the overall process from identifying project constraints, to developing the design details, through coordination with the contractor and construction management group during construction.

Ms. Sherri Berexa graduated from California Polytechnic State University, SLO with a degree in architectural Engineering (think structural engineering) and has over 20 year’s experience in the transportation sector.  Sherri began her career at Caltrans in the Office of Structure Design as a bridge designer where she was able to work on interesting project such as the retrofit of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge.  After having children, Sherri’s career moved to the “mommy track” with a combination of staying home a several years and working part time for eight years.  Sherri’s experience includes nine years as a project manager at Placer County where she had a variety of road and bridge projects with budgets ranging from less than $1 million to over $60 million.  Sherri’s time at a local agency provided experience in all project phases and multiple funding sources.  Today Sherri’s children are in college and Sherri has been at Psomas for the past 5 years working as a Resident Engineer in the Construction Management group.

Mr. Michael Sanchez graduated from UC Berkeley as a Civil Engineer with an interest in surveying and transportation design.  After working in Burlingame for a local surveying firm, Kavanagh Engineering, followed by four years with San Mateo County, Michael made the move to the Sacramento region and joined Quincy Engineering.  During his 17 years of experience at Quincy, Michael has focused on improving transportation for local agencies throughout the State of California.  His work has included design and management of roadway projects including major corridor improvements, highways, and intersections.  Michael particularly enjoyed working on the Sheldon Road/Waterman Road Roundabout Intersection because it is located only two miles from his home in Elk Grove.  Outside the office, Michael maintains a very active schedule with his wife and three sons by enjoying baseball, roller coasters, and jet skiing in the summer.
